The little things

To me, the feeling I get when I see cheese oozing from a hot pie (of the instant variety) is the same feeling I get when I am awed by the beauty of daybreak. So. Bloody. Beautiful.

Eat this!

Deep fried durian cube atop mango puree.

The best thing I’ve eaten all year, for now, still three more weeks before the year is out :)

Soft threads of cotton candy like batter envelope the creamy yellow gem in a gentle crisp, and the acid from the tangy mango puree offsets the richness of the durian perfectly.
Try. Now. For the love of God.

Prague 2008

rosewater
At Gordon Ramsay’s Maze located in the Hilton. Rose water flavoured turkish delights, so soft and delicate, see how the sides cave in ever so slightly under the light pressure applied on both sides by the brother’s fingers. Oh yum!

As much as I miss my kitchenaid mixer, I think I have made some of my most palatable baked goods here, with our cheap $15 mixer, home brand ingredients and sorry excuse for a oven. I think this can be attributed, in part, to the temporary emancipation from my health conscious mother, who would not fail to express her displeasure every time I decided to bake in her kitchen. Ah! Such freedom!

The most recent bake up was this absolutely gorgeous summery buttery lemon and poppy seed loaf cake. I polished off half a loaf in 3 days, shared some with the housemates and dug deep for some generosity to give some away :p

Try it, this recipe is a keeper.

Food and idiocy

I had no idea what Laduree macaroons where when Jen mentioned them a few weeks ago, macaroons I am sure she will be trying when she arrives in Paris this week or next :)

Also.

There is only one way to wear your stethoscope. The ear pieces must be facing outward before your put them in your ear. If you put the ear pieces in when they are facing inward, you are not going to hear a thing and in the process exhibit intelligence levels comparable to a squirrel’s.

I put on my stethoscope in reverse during a respiratory clinical examination today.

A sure fire way to impress one’s peers and clinical coach.

Give me some macaroons.

Hey Chocolat

My friend Joanne aka the other Jo is a straight shooter. I have fond memories of when we used to work together back in 2004, she was always the one to bring joy to the room with her effervescence and always managed to build good relationships with the people on the accounts she handled. When Jo started up her little home business a while ago, I had no doubt that her cakes were going to be an extension of her personality. Honest, no fuss, happy cakes, cakes full of substance minus the frills. She recently set up a blog to bring her signature chocolate cakes to the public.

Her signature chocolate cakes are priced at:
6″ (500gm) for S$15 (serves 4-6)
8″ (1kg) for S$28 (serves 8-10)

She also does a mean carrot cake and recently added cupcakes to her repertoire as she had numerous requests for them.

Do pop by Hey Chocolat and have a look at Jo’s cakes, she’s a lovely person who puts heart into everything she does :)
