Sibling

I am so proud of my brother.

He beat hundreds of applicants and was awarded one of a handful of scholarships available for 2nd year Masters students. An award that required academic excellence and good performance in interviews, an award not easily attainable in an ivy league university, what with peers as qualified or more qualified as yourself. In exchange for the monies he will serve as a lecturing assistant for 20 hours a week, of which he has to take time out to lecture first year economic students in micoeconomics. He will have to juggle that with the demands of his Masters programme as well as his commitments to the debating team.

My brother has always been my role model.

I should stop lamenting about the workload I have in first year Medicine and work harder.

I hope one day I can live up to the standards he has set as a child and as a brother.

I am so proud.

Love is in the air

I used to find pre wedding photo shoots tacky and horribly cheesy but I find I am beginning to appreciate good wedding photography, don’t get me wrong I still would not opt to have any taken if/when they day comes, but I acknowledge, good wedding photography is truly an art.

A photograph that captures the essence and personality of two people with interesting angles and light as opposed to just having fancy fashion shots showing off make up and outfits, is, to me a mark of a good picture taken. A more photojournalistic approach is a style that appeals to me.

Wenn’s latest series of wedding photos taken by her very talented friend made me smile. Although not photojournalistic, the pictures are so characteristically Wenn. It is as if I am taking a walk through her world and imagination, not surprising as she conceptualised the entire shoot herself.

Food and idiocy

I had no idea what Laduree macaroons where when Jen mentioned them a few weeks ago, macaroons I am sure she will be trying when she arrives in Paris this week or next :)

Also.

There is only one way to wear your stethoscope. The ear pieces must be facing outward before your put them in your ear. If you put the ear pieces in when they are facing inward, you are not going to hear a thing and in the process exhibit intelligence levels comparable to a squirrel’s.

I put on my stethoscope in reverse during a respiratory clinical examination today.

A sure fire way to impress one’s peers and clinical coach.

Give me some macaroons.

The nights are getting cooler here.
Last night it was 16 degrees celsius and we were cold and uncomfortable taking a short walk back to the car.

Can you imagine what it would be like to be homeless and living on the streets in winter?

Better for who?

I was chatting with someone over easter who brought up a very interesting view point in regards to people rendering aid to citizens of third world countries.

There are countless organisations putting in great effort to modernize and make living conditions in Africa more acceptable by current standards, however these changes, although benefiting to the community may not be necessarily be a welcomed change in their culture. Take for example the establishment of water irrigation systems and a drinkable water source where the community can have easy access to clean water. Good for the people? Yes. It makes life easier, improves sanitation and health. On the flip side, women of the tribe used to walk miles to bring back water from a distant well, this daily walk was akin to a pilgrimage they would make together everyday. It was a cultural way of life, they bonded, and it fostered tribal cohesiveness. Put the convenient water source in the equation and part of that culture is now lost.

Then it got me thinking about organizations that go bulldozing into these countries trying to bring good healthcare to the society, to eradicate endemics and provide protection in the form of vaccinations. Is what we are doing right? Everything that I am doing now is so I can be part of that cause, I do not believe that people have to suffer because they were born into circumstance and people who are privileged to have the time, skills, money and knowledge to provide aid and better the situation should take steps to do so . But, natural selection is a way of population control. An endemic controls numbers in that region, but with newer and better drugs and vaccines, we are going against the law of nature. Antibiotics were created to combat bacteria, but those little bastards are so resilient they have found ways to mutate and undergo genetic variations to preserve their species, and as a result, we now have terrifying virulent strains that are multi resistant to a large number of antibiotics.

Perhaps this rapid advancement in medicine is natural selection in itself. We are meddling with the law of nature, but nature comes back 10 fold with ways to counter our defences. Perhaps we will eventually cause the creation of various strains of viruses/bacteria so lethal, an epidemic of epic proportions will result in the demise of the human race.

We are writing our own end of days.

Maybe those zombie movies aren’t so far fetched after all.
